Police have appealed for more information after two sheep heads were found dumped in Derbyshire.

Police are investigating after finding decapitated sheep heads on the Stockley Trail.

The heads were discovered by a dog walker and have been cut off by a person "who knows what they are doing," according to the Derbyshire Constabulary Wildlife Officer.

The sheep were not slaughtered in an official slaughterhouse and so would not have been subject to safety inspections and controls.

The carcasses may be unsafe for human consumption as a result, the police added.

"We’d also advise people against buying cheap meat when you don’t know where it has come from – for example, in the pub," a spokesman said.

"You can’t know where the meat has come from, how old it is, or if it was slaughtered in a safe and controlled environment. We have now traced the owner of the sheep."
