Six receive NNAS Educational & Development Grants
Three agricultural college students, one newly qualified farrier and two apprentices received Educational & Development Grants totalling £3,825 at the Nottinghamshire County Show, held last weekend.
The Brackenhurst College students are Marcus Johnson from Pleasley Vale near Mansfield, Rachel Jones from Prestatyn in Wales and Jacqui Parker from Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.
Marcus is studying for a BTEC in Agriculture. His grant of £750 will be used to fund sprayer and trailer towing courses and tests which are required to further his career. Rachel is studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management; she is intending to further her education by studying for a BSc in Equine Sports Science and will spend her grant of £250 on the cost of gaining British Horse Society qualifications that will enable her to coach others in riding.
A mature student, Jacqui Parker’s original background was in law but a career change has seen her working towards a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture. Her £575 grant will be used towards the cost of pesticide courses and the NFU Certificate of Competence to transport animals.
Recently qualified farrier Jake Elliott, from Barnby Moor near Retford, has joined the family business and is on the team heading for Calgary to take part in the World [Horse] Shoemaking Championships. Jake received £750 towards his costs of competing.
Apprentices Mark Clucas, from Car Colston in Nottinghamshire, and Jamie Frith, who lives in Balderton near Newark, work for David Rose at his Farmeco Community Carefarm in Screveton. They were each awarded £750; Mark will spend his on pest control, telescopic handler, butchery and use of veterinary medicines courses while Jamie will use his grant for pest control, telescopic handler, spraying and boom sprayer courses.
In a separate ceremony, Mark Clucas won the inaugural Nottinghamshire Land Based Apprentice of the Year Award and Jamie was equal third.
Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society (NNAS) President Sir Andrew Buchanan Bt KCVO presented the grants which are funded by the NNAS which is a registered charity. The grants are awarded following successful application and interview and are specifically for funding educational development in the charity’s field of the promotion of agriculture; the recipients’ careers must be linked to the agricultural industry and be based in the County of Nottinghamshire.
