South Africa-Goats for Australia.

SOUTH AFRICA-GOATS FOR AUSTRALIA.

While goat meat is revered across the world, it is largely unappreciated in Australia.

However, that is changing with multiculturalism and the obesity epidemic, which is leading people to seek low-fat alternatives.

Similar in taste to lamb - but slightly sweeter - goat meat is now available in supermarkets and selected Sydney butchers.

Tony Coates, who has been exhibiting his boer goats at this year’s Royal Easter Show, said goat meat was one of the most widely eaten meats in the world.

While Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and Hindus can’t eat the meat of cows, there were no religious constraints on goat meat.

It is a popular meat for people of Greek background, Italians and Kenyans.

Mr Coates said it was also a much healthier alternative to other red meats.

"They have less fat than sheep," he said.

"They are low fat, low cholesterol."

Few people realise Australia is one of the biggest exporters of goat meat in the world and it is a huge growth industry.

Breeder Debbie Scattergood said that after South African and Texas, Australia was the world’s biggest producer of angora goats.

Due to political problems in South Africa, there was a great export opportunity for Australia, she said.

"With the breakdown of apartheid, the government is forcing a lot of white farmers to give up the land to the black population."
