Steer sells for record ’1,500 at Bishops Castle
A record top price of ’1,500 was paid for a steer at Halls’ St David’s Day store cattle sale at Bishops Castle Auction.
The record breaking Blonde D’Aquitaine steer was sold by farmer Mr M. E. Hamer, The Hollies as auctioneers Halls reported an encouraging entry 120 up on the same time last year, with 165 steers averaging ’966 a head and 218p per kilo, peaking at 269p.’
A total of 148 heifers sold to average ’850 and 211p per kilo, with a top price of 238p and ’1,335 a head recorded by Mr Nicky Sneade, Old Hall Farm with a Limousin heifer.
Bulls were also in good demand and sold to an overall average of ’859 and 199p per kilo. Top price per kilo was 234p and the highest price was ’1,095 for a 21-month-old bull from Messrs A. and J. Speke, Upper Woodbatch.

Limousin: ’1,280 for one 570 kilo steer from Mr N. Sneade, Old Hall Farm and 243p per kilo for two 350-kilo steers from Messrs S. and A. V. Richards, Crabtree Farm. Blonde D’Aquitaine: ’1,500 for one 740 kilo steer from Mr M. E. Hamer, The Hollies and 235p per kilo for three 360 kilo steers from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach. British Blue: ’1,360 and 234p per kilo for one 580 kilo steer from Messrs A. and J. Speke, Upper Woodbatch.
Heifers: Charolais: ’1,205 for a 570 kilo heifer from Mr N. Sneade, Old Hall Farm. Simmental: ’780 for one 380 kilo heifer from Mr B. P. H. Llewellyn, Great Brithdir. Limousin: ’1,335 for a 630 kilo heifer from Mr N. Sneade, Old Hall Farm and 238p per kilo for a 290 kilo heifer from Messrs O. and H. Moyle, Brynunty. Blonde D’Aquitaine: ’710 for a 425 kilo heifer and 212p per kilo for a 330 kilo heifer both from Mr C. J. Thomas, Ty Draw. British Blue: ’1,070 for two 505 kilo heifers and 216p per kilo for a 450 kilo heifer from Messrs A. and J. Speke, Upper Woodbatch.
