Strong message from NFU Livestock Board Chairman

"As a Union, we vehemently oppose and see absolutely no justification for electronic sheep identification. We have taken this firm stance in the hope that if we cannot stop the Regulation, it at least gives us an opportunity to get something better that could work – we are determined to find a workable and practical solution to the EU Regulation." This was the clear message set out by Alistair Mackintosh, NFU Livestock Board Chairman at a recent on farm meeting of Brecon and Radnor NFU Cymru members.

Members voiced their concerns for the future of the sheep industry in Brecon and Radnor if the EU Regulation for electronic sheep identification comes into effect in 2010. In response, Mr Mackintosh said, "We already have standstills and batch recording, and I cannot see how an electronic tag will help disease control. The electronic identification system offers no more than the current system we have.

"One major concern is that of the on farm flock register. After 2011, every individual number will have to be recorded and any losses cross referenced. In my mind, it cannot be done and I don't think farmers can physically do it. The Regulation must be simplified."

On the issue of rocketing input costs, Mr Mackintosh said, "Input costs are rising and it must be pointed out that this added expenditure is diminishing our profits. Consumers must question where the margins are being made and it is not at the farm gate. More of the retail price must pass back down the marketing chain.

"At present technology and regulation is driving our industry but it should be the market driving the industry. We have traceability as well as the highest welfare standards and if supermarkets want affordable, safe and continuous supply it is only us as British producers they will get it from."

Concluding the meeting, Gwyn Price, NFU Cymru Brecon and Radnor Vice Chairman thanked Mr Mackintosh for coming to the area to see at first hand how deeply frustrated farmers were at the prospect of electronic sheep identification but were reassured that the NFU Cymru would continue to do everything possible to oppose the Regulation.
