The Falkland Islands-Farmers ger Organic accreditation from Australia.
THE FALKLAND ISLANDS-FARMERS GOING ORGANIC WITH AUSRALIAN HELP.
Farmers from the tiny Falkland Islands are using Australian certifiers to go organic.
The islands are a self-governing territory of Britain, off the South American coastline.
Forty per cent of the Falkland Islands agricultural land is in the process of gaining organic certification from the company Australian Certified Organic.
ACO is a subsidiary company of the Biological Farmers of Australia group, and is accredited with the International Federation for Organic Agriculture..
The push to become organic came from the Falklands Government, which is promoting the organic sector in order to reach more international markets.
Currently wool is the only exported organic product from the Falkland Islands. However, the Government is aiming for farmers to export organic beef and lamb.
Biological Farmers of Australia director, Dr Andrew Monk, says the Falklands Department of Agriculture chose ACO due to the high standards of its accreditation.
He says that the Falkland Islands and Australia also share similar farming rangeland environments, which makes the ACO accreditation suitable.
