Thompson’s tip: Temperature control at weaning
Poor temperature control at weaning can be responsible for triggering many post-weaning disease problems in piglets, says ACMC veterinary consultant, Paul Thompson.
Modern systems allow precise recording of temperatures but for older buildings data-loggers are available at reasonable prices.
They will record temperatures at very frequent intervals and can then be downloaded to a PC electronically. Sensors should be positioned as close to pig height as possible while still remaining out of reach!
Running a second logger concurrently outside allows a check to be made on how well the building is coping with external temperature changes.
