Top quality bull from Signet

CATTLE breeders will have a bigger chance than ever of finding the performance recorded animals they need at this year's Perth Bull Sales in February.

More than two-thirds of five major breeds at the show will be in the top quarter of bulls assessed under the Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) system.

Well over half of bulls will have their EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values) displayed at the sale and in the case of Simmentals no less than 92 per cent have been assessed by the Meat and Livestock Commission's Signet Breeding Services.

Those in the top 25 per cent will include: 66 per cent of 335 Charolais, 62 per cent of 224 Limousin, 81 per cent of 214 Aberdeen Angus, 63 per cent of 203 Simmental and 67 per cent of 56 Beef Shorthorn.

Breeding Services Manager, Sam Boon, said: "The animals on sale at Perth this year represent many of the highest quality bulls in the country.

"Estimated Breeding Values help take away the risk when buying a bull - how are you to know what is under the skin without EBVs?"
