UNITED STATES-FOOD RECALL.
Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Lion Pavilion Ltd. is recalling some 16,213 pounds of seasoning products that contain cattle byproducts because they are ineligibly for import to the United States, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Wednesday.
The company issued the recall because China is ineligible to export beef products to the United States. The products subject to recall include:
14-ounce packages of "Lion Pavilion HOT-POT SEASONING CONTAINING BOVINE CATTLE FAT."
The products were distributed to retail establishments nationwide.
FSIS personnel discovered the problem while viewing the products in the marketplace. The agency has received no reports of illness as a result of consuming this product.
A father-and-son team of businessmen looking to open a small halal slaughterhouse facility in a mostly industrial area of Buffalo expect to get the necessary permits this week, the Buffalo News reported.
Despite community opposition, Mustasa Jaarah and his father, Yousef, have said they plan to file for their license by the end of the week, and already have hired an architect to make the necessary alterations to the site.
The pair got the approval of the zoning board in March, despite some local opposition and the location of the proposed processing facility, butcher shop and "farmer’s market" next door to an existing Subway sandwich shop. The license must be approved by the Buffalo Common Council.
Tuesday night the zoning board’s decision was entered into the Common Council’s records, and for a second time the opponents and supporters of the plan made their cases to the city’s legislative body, the News reported. Both sides are circulating petitions through the community.
The area where the Jaarahs wish to build their business is an area that historically housed Buffalo’s livestock and slaughter operations, but more recently has been developed as an area of industrial parks.
