A 67-year-old woman well-known for her community work has died in an accident involving a cow on a farm in County Armagh.

It is understood Thelma Gorman, who was a cattle breeder, was leading a cow when the incident happened.

The Northern Ireland Air ambulance had been called to the scene, near Armagh city, but her injuries were too severe and she unfortunately died.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are investigating the circumstances.

Local UUP Councillor Jim Speers, who knew Mrs Gorman well, described her death as “an absolute tragedy”, and DUP MLA William Irwin said that her passion was the breeding of pedigree Simmental cattle.

"The lady in question was working with animals all her life," he said.

On the Northern Ireland Simmenthal Breeders' Club Facebook page, tributes have been paid to its "long standing and highly esteemed committee member".

The club described her as an "inspiration to other breeders."

HSE figures from the 2016/17 period showed agriculture is the most dangerous UK profession, with 27 work-related.

Last year, 30 people were killed in agriculture, compared with 29 the year before.
