72-year-old dairy farmer dies after accident involving his own tractor

A dairy farmer has died following an accident involving his own tractor, it has emerged.

72-year-old Derek Mead from Somerset died over the weekend, reportedly involving a tractor on his own farm.

Reports say he was crushed by a JCB farm loader.

Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he died as a result of his injuries. Police and paramedics were called to The Laurels in Hewish, near Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset at 2.18pm.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “Mr Mead died following an incident in Hewish. It was a sudden death.”

Mr Mead was a well-known local entrepreneur and property developer.

In a statement the Mead family, who have been farming in Somerset since the 1400s, described the death as a "terrible loss".

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: "We can confirm HSE are aware of this incident and are making initial enquiries."
