Two additional dates have been added to the programme of red mite workshops being run by ADAS.
The Defra funded events—entitled ‘Effective control of red mite in free range laying flocks’—were originally scheduled to take place at five locations spread around the country. But demand from producers has led to two extra meetings being added to the programme to take in the East Midlands and North East regions (see below for full details).
The workshops will focus on the practical aspects of monitoring and treating red mite, says ADAS senior consultant John Newton.
“Red mite is one of the most important ectoparasites affecting free range layers. At high levels of infestation, attacks by mite can lead to stress in the birds, giving rise to feather pecking and even cannibalism. Other effects include reduced egg production and anaemia, which in severe cases can even cause death.
“With such an important topic we anticipate a good turn-out for what promises to be an interesting and informative series of workshops,” says Mr Newton.
The workshop sessions—which are being held in the evening—will feature ADAS mite expert Barbara Bell. Ms Bell will give an in-depth presentation after which producers will be able to participate in a question and answer session and share their own experiences. The efficacy of new and existing products will also be addressed.
Attendance at the workshops is free but pre-registration is necessary (details from Lynne Holmes on 01522 521290). Delegates will be awarded a certificate of attendance which can be used to form part of their training record.
