Can new print rules help stamp out imports?

New EU rules on egg stamping could put a new consumer focus on buying British according to Stonegate’s Michael Kent.

The new regulations, which are due to come into force on January 1, will demand that every egg carries a farm identification, the method of production and the country of origin. According to Mr Kent this will make it far less likely that consumers will pick up imported eggs in markets or low cost supermarkets believing that they are laid in the UK. And it will also enable British companies to target their marketing efforts more effectively.

“I believe that most consumers, given the choice, will pick up a British products,” he told the Daily Telegraph, “before it was not clear where the eggs came from.”

He said that the printing rules were placing a “huge cost” on the industry. “But it is adding more integrity to the supply chain,” he went on, “and its making the consumer better informed.”
