Caterers urged to use Lion eggs only

A major campaign has been launched to try and persuade caterers to only use Lion quality eggs.

The move follows recent outbreaks of salmonella poisoning caused by Spanish eggs and the British Egg Information Service has written to over 100,000 caterers advising them that they can meet their ‘due diligence’ requirements by looking for the Lion.

“A number of prosecutions have been highlighted in the media recently, following food poisoning outbreaks related to eggs that were not of British Lion quality standards,” wrote Kevin Coles of the BEIS.

“The good news is that more than 80 per cent of British eggs are now produced to the highest food safety standards in the world.”

Included with the letter was a leaflet outlining the food safety benefits of using Lion eggs, including salmonella vaccination and best-before dates on every egg.

“You can meet your due diligence requirements by looking for the Lion,” said the BEIS. “If the egg you use does not have a Lion and a best-before date on the shell, you cannot be sure it meets the stringent safety standards of the Lion Code of Practice.”
