A farmer has spoken of his anger towards those who leave dogs off leads in the countryside after losing a fifth of his flock since the start of July.

Ben Jones, who farms on the outskirts of Hensol in the Vale of Glamorgan, said he is “at the end of his tether” after a series of dog attacks on his sheep.

He said he is close to giving up farming due to the relentless amount of attacks.

Mr Jones has warned the public that he is within his rights to shoot the dog or dogs that keep coming on his land and attacking his sheep.

Since July, his flock of less than 100 sheep has been subject to three dog attacks. In the first attack, a dog killed six ewes and injured eight.

The attacks have all occurred in Hensol and it is believed the same dog – a black dog – is attacking the sheep.

PC Mark Goulding, said: “Worrying livestock includes chasing the animal in a way that could cause injury or suffering. The Vale of Glamorgan neighbour beat team have already prosecuted one dog owner and will continue to take enforcement action.

“We are trying to identify this dog and are urging its owner or anybody who knows who owns the dog to contact us immediately.”

PC Goulding added: “The owner of this particular dog may have no clue whatsoever about the damage and suffering that the dog is causing.

“All dog owners wherever they may be should be aware of where their dogs are at all times, especially those living in or near rural areas where livestock are kept.”
