A North Yorkshire farmer in his 60s has been trampled to death by a bull in a field.

Police were called to a field south of Hutton Rudby, near Stokesley, following reports of a man who had been trampled by a bull on Monday aternoon (31 July).

The man who died at Doddle Hill Farm was named locally as Brian Swales.

Hambleton Inspector David Murray said: “Police are investigating this tragic incident but believe there are no suspicious circumstances.

“The man’s family is being supported by specially-trained officers at this incredibly difficult time.”

The incident comes only days after the end of Farm Safety Week (July 24-28).

The Farm Safety Partnership said many farmers never stop to consider why animals behave as they do and, more importantly, what this behaviour could mean to their personal safety.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures from the 2016/17 period showed agriculture is the most dangerous UK profession, with 27 work-related.

Last year, 30 people were killed in agriculture, compared with 29 the year before.
