A farmer has been seriously injured after a bull landed on him at a livestock mart in Aberdeenshire.

The farmer, Douglas Smith, attended a show at the Thainstone Mart, near Inverurie, on Tuesday (27 November).

Mr Smith was in the mart show ring with his 1-tonne Simmental bull when the accident happened.

The bull reared up and landed on the farmer, according to the Press and Journal.

Emergency services were called to the livestock mart, and Mr Smith was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The accident comes as the annual Farm Safety Week explored ways farmers can stay safe when handling livestock.

Handling cattle always involves risks, the risk of being hurt physically by an animal that is frightened or has been startled and the risk of being hurt due to the misuse of equipment or equipment that is poorly maintained.

Most animal incidents are not fatal, but too many men, women and children are needlessly injured every year due to a lack of safety awareness.
