The role of farmers as providers of food, environment and the landscape has been highlighted in NFU Cymru's new bale sticker campaign.

Ahead of the Royal Welsh Show, major routes to the show ground in Llanelwedd will be lined with eye-catching gate banners and colourful bale stickers.

They will be highlighting the important contributions that farmers have made in producing the nation's food, caring for the environment and providing backdrop scenery that attracts millions of tourists every year.

The bale stickers will feature an image of a hamper filled with produce set against agricultural fields.

The new gate banners will feature NFU Cymru Carmarthenshire county chairman Garry Williams holding a Welsh hamper with home-grown goods.

The public are being urged to share the images on social media.

'Extremely proud'

"As Welsh farmers we produce the nation's food, we care for and enhance our local environment and we shape our famous landscape, I think that’s something to be extremely proud of!" said Mr Williams.

"This is a vital time for our industry and we need farmers to be loud and proud about the work they do – these new bale stickers and gate banners are the perfect way for Welsh farmers to advertise the important role they play for Wales."

NFU Cymru Deputy President John Davies added: "Our bale stickers were the star of last year's Royal Welsh Show and this year we wanted to take things up a notch to push out our messages to the public.

"The new bale stickers and gate banners are vibrant and really stand out along Wales' roadsides and hedge lines.

"These resources have only just been rolled out and the demand from members is already exceptionally high, it's great that so many people in Welsh agriculture want to share that they are 'Proud to Produce' for the people of Wales."

Power of social media

The Proud to Produce campaign is seen as an example of using the power of social media to amplify public support for British farming.

Farmers have been told to learn more about the importance of using social media to harness support.

Simon Ashby, the NFU’s social media adviser, spoke at this year's Cereals event. He said: “In recent months we have been touring the country connecting with farmers to create momentum across Twitter and Facebook on key farming issues and outlining the most effective ways to use social media to combat some of the challenges facing the industry.

“We have already seen the number of active British farmers on social media increase substantially in 2017 using our top tips as a guide for increasing their social media footprints and we want to get more actively involved."
