Five people needed medical treatment following a fire on an Aberdeenshire farm which took more than one hour to distinguish.

The blaze tore through a farm building at Gowanfold Farm, Fraserburgh on Sunday evening (20 May).

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene, and another person was sent to hospital for further treatment.

Fraserburgh and district councillor Charles Buchan told The Press and Journal it was a "real blessing" that nobody was hurt.

Mr Buchan said: “I am so pleased nobody has been hurt. It is a real blessing that is the case.

“The farmer may well be counting the cost of this incident.

“I would like to thank all the rescue services for all of their efforts and hard work in putting it out. Well done to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”

A sharp rise in farm fires has prompted a rural insurer to call for farmers to check their fire prevention and evacuation procedures.

NFU Mutual’s claims statistics reveal that the cost of farm fire claims rose by an alarming 26% to £44m in 2016.

The most common cause of farm fires was electrical faults, which were responsible for almost half of 2016 fire claims, according to the insurer. Arson was the next most common cause.
