A House of Lords Committee is hosting a discussion with food and farming industry experts to discuss how Brexit might impact on food prices.

Thirty per cent of food consumed in the UK comes from the EU, including over 83 per cent of its fresh vegetables.

After Brexit, some believe that tariff and non-tariff barriers could result in higher prices and impact on the availability of food.

Given this, the House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee will host a roundtable discussion with industry experts on Wednesday 7 February to discuss how Brexit might impact food prices, availability and choice.

Topics which the Committee are likely to cover include possible future tariffs and customs arrangements, whether Brexit could lead to more food being produced in the UK or imported from non-EU countries.

It will also consider what impact leaving the Common Agricultural Policy may have on food prices and availability and what model for future farm subsidies would be best to ensure food security.

Other subjects likely to be included is the issue of ending freedom of movement, and how this will affect the food and farming industry.

Taking part in the discussion will be representatives from Food and Drink Federation, British Food Importers & Distributors Association, British Retail Consortium, the NFU, Which? and the City University’s Centre for Food Policy.
