Hundreds of tonnes of straw were set on fire at a farm just outside Cambridgeshire earlier this week.

A police investigation has now been launched after the blaze, which set fire to around 500 tonnes of straw, is thought to be a suspected arson attack on the farm.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it had received “multiple calls” from residents reporting a large fire in Withersfield, near Haverhill on Tuesday (19 September).

Inquires are being held as to whether the fire was started deliberately.

Cambridgeshire Police stated that nobody was hurt during the fire and it is not thought to have spread.

A post on Facebook claimed that there were around seven individuals were seen moments before the fire happened.

The post said: "A group of around seven young lads on push bikes (approx age 12-14 years old) were seen by a few dog walkers in this area between 6pm and 6.15pm today (Tuesday 19th September 2017).

"The fire was reported at 6.20pm, meaning these lads could have witnessed who started the fire.

"These lads were seen heading up to the hay bales on push bikes and were witnessed by a few people during these time frames.

"If anyone has information please inform the police."

A Suffolk police spokesman said: “Enquires are ongoing as to whether the fire was started deliberately.”
