Police have been called after eighteen lambs were killed in shootings at two farms just days apart in the Doncaster region.

Cherry Tree Lodge Farm, Crow Tree Bank reported twelve lambs as being shot and Stoupers Gate Farm, near Hatfield said six had been killed overnight.

"It's heartbreaking seeing that sort of stuff," said Tom Brooke of Stoupers Gate Farm.

"I’ve had sheep stolen before but this is sick. We have been lambing from the third week in January and had all these late nights - it’s a stressful period - and how people can do something like that, I don’t know."

Insp Mark Payling, from South Yorkshire Police, said the "thoughtless act of violence... had caused outrage amongst the farming community across the region and beyond".

"Both incidents have caused distress and outrage not only in our local communities, but across South Yorkshire."

Police and the RSPCA are investigating the shooting and officers have forensically examined the farmland for any evidence.

Cherry Tree Lodge farm is just over a mile away from Stoupers Gate Farm, Hatfield where a number of lambs were shot and killed last week.
