Lambs have been killed and had their ears cut off in a bizarre attack on a Co Down farm, Northern Ireland.

Eight sheep had their ears sliced while three others were stabbed in the throat on a farm at Temple Hill Road, Ballyholland, near Newry.

Three of the sheep had to be put down due to their severe injuries.

Ruairi McCartney, whose father owns the farm, said he was "completely devastated".

"It was just shocking. At first I thought it might have been a dog attack," he told the BBC.

Another flock belonging to a farmer in the Ballyholland area was attacked about two weeks ago.

Mr McCartney continued: “There are no grudges held around here, so I don’t understand who would have done this.”

It is believed the attack happened between 20:30on Tuesday (4 July) and 08:30 on Wednesday (5 July).

Anyone with information about the incident can contact police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference number 188 of 05/07/2017.
