A Scottish sheep shearer has took on a 'shear endurance' marathon task, tackling more than 2,000 sheep in a 50-hour challenge.

Hundreds of spectators watched as Grant Hurcomb, who comes from Stranraer, tackled the sheep for Cancer Research UK and MND Scotland.

He started the marathon task on Thursday July 7 at 7pm and finished at 9pm on Saturday July 9.

He averaged 50 sheep an hour, shearing a total of 2,142 sheep.

Rowan Main, Cancer Research UK local area manager for Dumfries and Galloway, said Mr Hurcomb was a "remarkable young man".

"Grant had a huge support team and getting more than 2,000 sheep to the farm where the shearing challenge took place was an incredible logistical feat," she said.

"I know Grant also appreciated round-the-clock support from those cheering him on while the challenge took place.

"Our heartfelt thanks goes to Grant, his friends, family and supporters."

30-year-old New Zealander Rowland Smith is preparing to take on the ‘Eight Hour Ewe World Shearing Record’ this month in the UK.
