Actor Stuart McQuarrie, who has appeared in films such as Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, is to face trial over accusations his dog killed sheep.

The 55-year-old is said to have been in charge of his Korthals Griffon when the animal allegedly chased sheep 'to their distress, injury and death,' the BBC reports.

The alleged incident, which took place on 24 March, happened on farmland at Dumbrock Muir, Strathblane, central Scotland.

The actor, who was not present at Stirling Sheriff Court, pleaded not guilty. A trial is set for March.

According to Shooting UK, Korthals Griffon is a hunting breed that's still rare in Britain, and is often called the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.

The alleged incident follows news of Claudia Schiffer's dog killing a pregnant sheep and mauling two others.

The German supermodel has since agreed to pay out £8,000 to the affected farmer.

Earlier this year, NFU Deputy President Guy Smith told a Parliamentary committee that attacks on livestock can disrupt decades of careful breeding and is often extremely difficult for a farm to recover from.

Rural insurer NFU Mutual recently revealed that the cost of claims related to livestock worrying has reached a record level of £1.6 million across the UK.

The figures follow the release of a report by the All Party Parliamentary Animal Welfare Group which shows more than 1,800 farm animals have been killed by dog attacks in the space of four years.
