Police are appealing for information after farm gates were purposely removed to allow cows to escape the field.

An unknown person removed the gates to a Staffordshire farmer's field, and police say this is not a one-off incident.

Staffordshire Police say there have been a number of occasions of the same gate being removed at Birch Tree Farm, on Eliases Lane, Biddulph Moor.

The force are now appealing for any information, and warning that loose livestock can be a hazard to nearby road users.

A police spokesperson said: "Unfortunately we have received a report from a local farmer that keeps cattle in a field off Birch tree farm, Eliases Lane reporting that on a few occasions unknown persons have been removing the gates to his field and letting his cows out.

"This is not only a criminal offence as it is causing a danger to other road users but it could also be extremely dangerous as it could cause a serious accident.
