A Welsh abattoir is to temporarily shut down for up to eight weeks while it struggles with a shortage of livestock.

Some 40 full-time and temporary staff will be laid off temporarily at Menai Meats Wales in Caernarfon, Gwynedd from March 17.

Plant manager Muhammad Ali said the lay-off was disappointing but inevitable given the abattoir’s supply issues.

“It’s just a seasonal situation where we can’t get enough livestock to justify the cost of staying open,” he told the Daily Post.

“Located where we are, we must get stock from where we can and it’s costly to bring them in, so we have decided to close down for six to eight weeks.

“Of course, the plant will re-open once the main spring lamb supplies start coming through.”

At peak production it processes around 2,000 lambs per day, and up to 300 cattle-a-week
