Global Meat News has launched its annual global challenge to find the World’s Best Steak.

Now in its fourth year, the World Steak Challenge is designed to benchmark the quality of beef production against international competitors.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to rib eye and fillet steaks as well as sirloins. But from the winners in each category, only one steak will achieve the prestigious status of World’s Best Steak 2018.

Last year, that title went to ABP Poland, the Polish division of ABP Food Group. Both the previous years’ titles were taken by the Australian cattle ranch Jack’s Creek, entered by Albers GMBH.

All three champion steaks were grain-fed sirloins.

The live judging and awards event remains in London for 2018, taking place on Wednesday, July 4 at the Magic Roundabout in Old Street.

Celebrating steak

Global Meat News deputy editor Aidan Fortune said: “The World Steak Challenge is about celebrating the pleasure and the benefits of eating steak as part of a healthy, balanced diet. This ultimate test of rib eye, fillet and sirloin highlights the quality and premium standard of beef production across the globe.

“Every year we are served with an embarrassment of top quality steaks. All three competitions have been incredibly close and I’m sure 2018 will be no different as we cast the net even wider in the search for premium steak production.”

Entries in last year’s World Steak Challenge were received from 17 countries, with 10 of them securing gold medals. Of the 17 Golds awarded, seven were for rib eye, five for sirloin and five for fillet. Nine of the winners were grain-fed and eight grass-fed.

The 10 Gold medal winning countries were Australia 2, Brazil 1, England 2, Finland 1, Ireland 3 Northern Ireland 2, Poland 2, Scotland 1, Spain 2, USA 1.
