Eat, Shop and Explore at The Knot
Work is underway on The Knot, our new farm shop and café which will showcase the best of local producers.
Scheduled to open in Spring 2026, it will create 19 full-time equivalent jobs.
Our core offerings will include:
• Menus inspired by the estate: Featuring estate-grown produce, including Courteenhall’s own Traditional Hereford Beef, as well as local ingredients that celebrate heritage with a modern twist.
• An immersive dining experience: Fresh meals in a space that reflects
Courteenhall’s commitment to sustainability and legacy, enhanced by the building’s natural height and openness.
• Shopping experience: A curated selection of artisan goods, preserves, baked treats and sustainable products, from the estate, local producers and the wider UK farming community.
A key part of our offer at The Knot will see us championing local food producers in Northamptonshire and the wider UK farming community at a time when the sector is facing a number of challenges.
Courteenhall Estate is run by Johnny Wake, a former doctor and winner of the British Farming Awards Sustainable Farmer of 2024. We take pride in our contributions to the local community, economy and the environment and are passionate about nurturing, protecting and improving our surroundings.
Our approach to farming is regenerative, with a particular focus on soil, water and biodiversity. We work hard to build a wide variety of diverse and sustainable practices across our farming activities, from investing in cutting-edge technology, increasing biodiversity and our dedication to soil health to maximising our use of natural fertilisers and re-introducing native rare breed animals to our land.
After working with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, we reintroduced our wonderful Traditional Hereford cattle to our parkland. They have a high quality of life and graze outside all year round on our grassland, with no supplementary feed needed.
Our herd has lots of space to meander and we love that they naturally support our soil, regenerate our land, keep our grasslands healthy and boost the quality and diversity of flora and fauna as they do so.
They support insects, including pollinators such as bees, and we’ve already seen the return of the dung beetle, a keystone species (an organism which helps hold the system together) which can bring an array of benefits, and even types of orchids that we have not seen before. We’re also seeing more wildflower species which are a good source of pollen and nectar.
We are on a mission to reconnect people with nature, food and the land it comes from.
We also specialise in combinable crops, producing high-quality cereals such as wheat, barley and oats as well as legumes such as beans. These crops serve a wide range of purposes, including being used by local makers of bread and cereal.
We also grow a lot of stewardship crops. These include leguminous fallow, which offers numerous benefits including naturally recharging soil and suppressing weeds and also growing pollinator seed mixes and wild bird seed mixes.
By implementing practices that prioritise respect for the land, we can ensure healthy ecosystems for future generations.
We are proud to have won a number of awards for our work.
