Course overview
What You Will Study
Are you fascinated by the science behind animal health, behaviour, and biology? Do you dream of a career in veterinary medicine, research, or laboratory science? This two year course offers a powerful blend of academic study and practical experience, designed to prepare you for university and beyond.
In your first year, you will cover core units from Animal Management Level 3, including: safe working practices around animals, animal husbandry, health and handling, and animal behaviour, welfare, and biology. This year sets the stage for deeper scientific exploration in your second year, where the focus shifts to specialist science units such as animal nursing, chemistry for biological technicians, cell biology and genetics, and biochemistry and microbiology.
Alongside classroom-based learning, you will gain hands-on experience in our Animal Management Centre, which is home to a diverse array of species, including critically endangered fish from South America, a variety of amphibians, snakes and lizards such as our boa constrictor, as well as a selection of birds and mammals, including goats and alpacas. Recent enhancements to the centre include a new coral propagation and marine fish breeding system, zoo-style enclosures for our reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, a pet shop-style exotics room, and upgrades to our mammal rooms and paddock area.
Throughout your studies, you will carry out practical tasks, including: cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation, and feeding, watering, grooming, and exercising animals. You will also complete work experience placements and weekend duties, helping you to apply your learning in professional settings and build confidence in animal care and scientific practice.
You will need to purchase PPE for the Animal Management Centre to study Animal Science Level 3. Full details will be provided at enrolment.
