Course overview
This course, formerly known as CS30, provides you with a thorough understanding of chainsaw maintenance and safe operation as well as the cross-cutting of timber. It is delivered through both practical and theory sessions and you should be familiar with the machinery, equipment and tools that you are going to use.
Chainsaws and PPE will be provided, however, if you are going to use your own PPE it must meet the following standards:
Safety helmet (EN 397) with hearing protection (EN 352-1) and eye protection, either mesh visor (EN 1731) or safety glasses (EN 166)
Chainsaw protective trousers (EN 381-5) Type C all-round leg protection
Safety boots to BS EN ISO 20345:2004 and bearing a shield depicting a chainsaw to show compliance with EN381-3
Chainsaw gloves (EN381-7).
You are welcome to bring food and drink with you but refreshments are also available to purchase on Campus.
You will be required to send a passport type photo as a jpeg file to the assessment centre, more details will be given to you prior to the start of the course.
Units of study/what is involved
The course covers the assessment criteria and is divided in to two Mandatory units:
Unit 201 Carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system. Outcomes:
Be able to work safely
Be able to carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system
Be able to carry out operational chainsaw checks
Know relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice
Know how to carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system.
Unit 202 Cross-cut timber using a chainsaw. Outcomes:
Be able to work safely
Be able to cross-cut timber using a chainsaw
Know relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice
Know how to cross-cut timber using a chainsaw.
