Course Overview
Holistic Planned Grazing is a practical, field-tested approach to managing livestock so that animals stay healthy and productive while improving soil health.
You’ll learn how to plan grazing using a structured, time-based process that accounts for weather, plant growth, recovery periods, livestock needs, wildlife, cropping patterns, family commitments, and much more.
This course helps you understand exactly how to move livestock through your land in a way that builds fertility, increases biodiversity, improves water cycling, and strengthens your long-term profitability for farm businesses.
Prerequisite: Course 1 — Holistic Management Fundamentals
What You’ll Achieve
Increase grass productivity and forage availability.
Improve livestock performance and overall herd health.
Raise stocking rates without degrading land.
Boost biodiversity and plant density.
Reduce dependency on external inputs.
Build greater resilience to drought, flood, and erratic weather.
What You’ll Learn
The Principles of Holistic Planned Grazing — understanding recovery periods, animal impact, timing, and the role of stock density.
Reading the Land — how to assess plant growth, soil cover, and ecosystem function to inform grazing decisions.
Planning the Grazing Season — how to build a grazing plan that accounts for:
variable weather
diverse livestock classes
croplands, orchards, vineyards, and wildlife needs
family commitments and holidays
Monitoring and Adjusting — how to track progress during the season and make adjustments early to stay on course.
Practical Application — simple, repeatable tools for mapping moves, estimating recovery periods, and preventing overgrazing.
How It Works
Join the live online class from anywhere via Zoom. You’ll meet weekly with a 3LM Accredited Educator and a group of land managers focused on improving grazing outcomes.
All sessions are recorded so you can revisit lessons or catch up anytime. Exercises between sessions help you apply the planning tools to your own land.
By the end of the course, you will have built a complete grazing plan tailored to your operation.
Certificates & Accreditation
Participants receive a Certificate of Completion recognised by the Savory Institute. This course is part of the official educational pathway toward becoming a Savory Institute Accredited Professional.
