“If you can read the land early, you can change course early. Monitoring and planning together give you the confidence to manage proactively instead of reactively.”
— 3LM Educator Team
Course Overview
This combined course teaches you how to monitor your land for early signs of change and how to plan long-term infrastructure improvements that support regenerative outcomes.
First, in Holistic Ecological Monitoring, you will learn how to use the Basic and Comprehensive monitoring procedures to understand how your land is responding to current management.
Then, in Holistic Land Planning, you will design the fencing, water systems, laneways, and layouts needed to support resilient livestock and cropping systems.
Together, these skills help you make timely adjustments, avoid costly redesigns, and build a long-term plan that supports the health and profitability of your farm business.
Prerequisite: Course 1 — Holistic Management Fundamentals
What You’ll Achieve
Detect early signs of improvement or decline on your land.
Use monitoring results to guide grazing or cropping decisions.
Reduce risk by planning infrastructure with clear purpose and long-term benefit.
Improve animal performance through better layout and water access.
Avoid costly redesigns as herd sizes or enterprises change.
Strengthen your ability to manage land with confidence and foresight.
What You’ll Learn
Ecological Monitoring
Basic Monitoring Procedure — how to gather the minimum information needed to keep your management on track.
Comprehensive Monitoring Procedure — how to collect quantitative data to track trends over time.
Reading the Land — how to assess soil cover, plant density, litter, biodiversity, and soil surface condition.
Interpreting Change — how to recognise whether your management is helping or hindering ecosystem processes.
Holistic Land Planning
Infrastructure Planning — how to design fencing, laneways, and paddock layouts that minimise water points and increase flexibility.
Planning for Enterprise Growth — how to anticipate infrastructure needs as herd numbers or enterprises expand.
Mapping and Design Tools — practical methods for planning layouts on paper or digitally.
Avoiding Redesigns — how good planning now saves time and money in the future.
Developing Your Own Land Plan — work through an example plan with your classmates.
How It Works
Join the live online class from anywhere via Zoom. You’ll meet weekly with a 3LM Accredited Educator and a group of land managers focused on improving the ecological and economic performance of their farms.
All sessions are recorded so you can revisit lessons or catch up anytime. Exercises between sessions help you practise both the monitoring procedures and the land-planning tools on your own land.
By the end of the course, you will be able to conduct monitoring confidently and design a practical, long-term land plan for your operation.
Certificates & Accreditation
Participants receive a Certificate of Completion recognised by the Savory Institute. This course forms part of the official educational pathway toward becoming a Savory Institute Accredited Professional.
