Job Title: Assistant Livestock Manager
Reports to: Farm Manager and in their absence, Farm Grieve
Status: Permanent, full time
Job Summary:
Atholl Estates are looking for an Assistant Livestock Manager to support an established team with its expanding regenerative farming enterprises. The Home Farm forms part of the rural enterprises of the diversified 120,000 acre Estate; with farming, forestry, sporting and environmental interests. The farm is currently running 150 commercial suckler cows and a growing herd of pedigree native angus on an extensive low-input system. We also run 800 scottish blackfaced ewes on a hill and pasture-based system selling store and finished lambs.
This role will play a key part in the teams work increasing the breeding herds at Home Farm, as well as establishing a new, outwintered pedigree aberdeen angus herd on a separate holding of 1,000 acres recently acquired under contract.
Key Responsibilities:
•Assisting the team with day-to-day operation of the sheep and cattle enterprises including calving and lambing mainly outdoors
•Support Farm Manager in running of new holding, establishing an extensive suckler herd from a grass-based system
•Implementation of regenerative grazing plans
•Management of temporary electric fencing and No-Fence cattle collars
•Support in the establishment of sheep EID system
•General repairs and maintenance including of stock fencing
•Safe operation and maintenance of machinery for all aspects of livestock husbandry including hay making and wider estate work
•Support in livestock record keeping
•Monitoring of biodiversity
The successful candidate will ideally have:
•Respectable stock skills and experience in all aspects of suckler cow and sheep management
•High welfare standards
•Understanding of regenerative pasture based grazing systems, soil testing and biodiversity monitoring, or eagerness to learn
•Working dogs
•Highly organised with good house keeping
•Enthusiastic, positive, proactive and a good communicator
•Basic computer and mobile app-based literacy
•High regard for health and safety
•UK driving licence
•Trailer, ATV and telehandler qualifications are advantageous but not necessary
