Herdsperson sought for our family run Autumn Block Calving Dairy Farm near Ilminster, Somerset, milking 400 crossbred cows twice daily on a solids milk contract.
The farm operates over two sites in close proximity, with substantial investments in recent years to the dairy unit. In 2024 the existing parlour was replaced, and in 2025 a brand new identical DeLaval 20/40 parlour with ADF has been built alongside to facilitate faster milking. This development added a large collecting yard to serve both parlours, a segregation gate and improved race facilities.
The herd is housed in cubicles over winter and fed a TMR via a Strautmann feeder wagon and turned out as soon as the ground allows to maximise forage from grass. Heat detection and cow health are additionally monitored using Sense Hub Collars.
The ideal candidate would be competent running the day to day management of the cows; participating in the majority of milkings, taking primary responsibility for foot trimming and individual cow health, but with scope to tailor the role to suit your interests.
Artificial Insemination, wider herd health management and breeding decisions would be undertaken in conjunction with the farmer, guided by our team of vets and various farm consultants. Primary herdsperson experience is preferable, but the right person for our team is our priority.
At present we operate a 4.5 day working week, with additional alternate weekends working and evening checks during calving on a rota. We are continually working to be more efficient to improve working hours.
A 3 bedroom farmhouse is on offer, along with a competitive salary dependent on experience. A valid UK drivers licence is required.
