a fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced herdsperson to join a modern organic dairy unit in west dorset, near crewkerne.
the herd comprises approximately 350 cows, primarily autumn calving with a small spring block. cows are milked twice a day through a 20:40 gea parlour with acrs, auto id, segregation and automatic wash. the unit was purpose built around 10 years ago and includes cubicle housing and a well designed handling system.
the herd is currently averaging 8,800 litres, with milk being supplied to yeo valley, so maintaining high standards of welfare, hygiene and herd management is essential.
the role will involve leading milkings and taking responsibility for day to day herd management, including herd health, ai, foot trimming, calving and working closely with the vet. night checks will be carried out on a rota basis. you will need to be a good team player, and be proactive in managing the herd.
applicants must have proven experience working with a herd of this size and be confident operating independently in a managerial role whilst maintaining consistently high standards.
a good 3 bedroom house is included with the role, located a short walk from the unit and provided rent free, including rates and council tax. a competitive salary and regular time off are offered. the farm is in a rural location but close to local shops and schools.
