'Impressive' store cattle prices at Bishops Castle auction

Impressive prices were recorded as Bishops Castle Auction began the year with a total clearance of 370 store cattle on January 24.

The wintry weather prevented some farmers from getting to the sale and reduced the catalogue entry from 500, but a good contingent of buyers ensured strong and competitive bidding and a pleasing trade across the board.

An improved entry of 43 bulls was keenly sought after, selling to an average price per kilo of 208p and £770 per head.

Top price per kilo was 239p for a pair of Limousin cross bulls from Messrs Aston Hall Farms. Highest priced bull at £1,150 was shared by two from Mr D. W. Evans, Ty Mawr.

A total of 209 steers sold to an impressive average price per kilo of 227p and £915 per head. Top price per kilo was a very respectable 293p for a bunch of top quality steers from Messrs J. G. and S. E. Robinson, Cefn Du, which weighed 350 kilos and made £990.

Top price per head was £1,300 for a cracking Blonde cross steer weighing 580 kilos from Mr N. Sneade, Old Hall Farm. A large number of steers sold between £1,000 and £1,300.

An average price of 212.5p per kilo and £810 per head was recorded for the 118 heifers on offer.

Top price per kilo was 244p for a bunch of great quality Belgian Blue heifers from Messrs S. J. C. Morris and Sons, Whitcott Evan, who also recorded the top price per head of £1,250 for a Belgian Blue heifer weighing 555 kilos.
