A farm near Galashiels in southern Scotland has experienced a significant fire, which police are treating as suspicious.

Scotland Police believe the fire, started on a farm near the villages of Threepwood and Stow in the Scottish Borders, was started deliberately.

The incident happened at approximately 6pm on Sunday (January 28).

Hay bales inside a barn were set on fire, which began to spread, causing significant damage to farm machinery and other equipment.

Det Sgt Stevie Halls described the incident as a "reckless act" and asked the public for more information.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were able to contain and put out the flames and thankfully no-one was injured as a result," he said.

"I would ask anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area prior to the blaze to come forward to assist with our investigations.

"Equally anyone who knows who is responsible or has information that can help with our inquiries is asked to get in touch."

Anyone with information are asked to contact Galashiels Police Station via 101, quoting incident number 3029 of January 28.
