Step aside Travolta, there's a new chick in town! With news that radios are to be installed on all of its farms, the Clarence Court hens are letting their feathers down and limbering up for some serious grooving. From the Dixie Chicks to McFly, the hens will be able to enjoy the ultimate in hen-house entertainment – and so can you, when you visit the Clarence Court website www.clarencecourt.com, click on the hen-cam and witness hen mania.
"Chickens love to be busy," says Clarence Court founder, Philip Lee-Woolf, "and they need plenty of stimulation, which is why all our hens are free to roam and forage on acres of green pasture from dawn to dusk. Music will provide an even more exciting environment in which to hop, bop and bound. Watching this on the hen-cam will be fantastic fun and perhaps offer us all inspiration to dance the 'Funky Chicken!'"
Installing radios is part of Philip's continued effort not only to improve the birds' habitat and surroundings but also to encourage consumers to eat ethically sourced eggs. Founded in 1990, Clarence Court has pioneered the revival of traditional British speciality breeds of hens from old pure breed bloodlines, for use in egg production. These birds, unlike modern hybrids, were bred for egg quality and not quantity. The result, eggs with a unique flavour and texture typical of the old fashioned pure breeds – no wonder celebrity chefs such as Mark Hix and Jamie Oliver are fans of the Clarence Court range.
Following on from Ethical Egg Week, and the release of the Ten Point Plan for Happy Hens, to highlight the requirements and standards necessary for ethical egg production, Philip has been airing various tunes from his farm in the Cotswolds to his flock and observing their behavioural patterns. Consequently Clarence Court has been able to compile an official Top Five 'Poultry Pleasers' which will be distributed to all their farmers. Hen Nights have never looked so good.
