A great career choice for young farmers

Young farmers should consider agricultural accountancy as an alternative career to land agency or estate management, according to Old Mill’s newest professional.

Speaking at the recent Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Show at the Bath & West showground, Dan Knight said common preconceptions about chartered accountants could not be further from the truth. "People see accountants as suits sitting at desks crunching numbers, but agricultural accountancy is nothing like that. Old Mill’s farm accounts team is made up of young farmers, and we’re still very much involved with the farming community in our day to day work."

Mr Knight was presented to the Countess of Wessex, president of the Royal Bath & West of England Society, at the show, where Old Mill held a recruitment fair and sponsored a series of seminars. "It is great to be part of such a new and exciting show, and to speak to so many agricultural students about the possibilities of a career in accounting," he said.

"A lot of students who are not planning to farm themselves are interested in estate management, but don’t consider accountancy as an alternative option to land agency. If you enjoy a challenge it is a very stimulating and rewarding career. It’s very interesting going round to clients’ farms and helping both family farms and estates to preserve their wealth and get the most out of their businesses."
