Abattoir initiative welcomed, but investors urged to exercise caution
NFU Cymru has welcomed the initiative at yesterday's Anglesey show that three former abattoir managers are proposing to open a new farmer owned co-operative slaughterhouse. However, the Union is urging potential investors to examine the business plan in detail, before committing any money to the venture.
NFU President Dai Davies said, "NFU Cymru fully supports the concept of co-operation between farmers in order to gain an element of control over their market place.
"Following the recent closure of two abattoirs in the area, there is a desperate need for a slaughterhouse in North West Wales that is capable of processing beef, sheep, and pigs and we welcome this initiative.
"However, it is crucial that the new enterprise must have a detailed and viable business plan and it is also important that the new enterprise has a robust and experienced management structure. These two factors are fundamental to the success of any business, and would provide the necessary reassurance to any would be investors.
Mr. Davies concluded, "It is also vital that the Board of the co-op is identifiable and approachable so that farmers are able to discuss their hopes and concerns with people that they know and trust."
