Advice on reviving cows after calving

Trouw Nutrition has published an educational DVD for dairy farmers highlighting just how important it is to replenish the fluids cows lose during calving and provide vital nutrients for optimum lactation performance and fertility.

"Calving is a very stressful experience for the cow," explains Trouw Nutrition technical manager John Twigge. "During the birth of a calf she loses about 50 litres of fluids and a large amount of electrolytes – hardly the best preparation for nine months of milk production."

The practical Maxcare Reviva DVD explains the benefits of giving cows a highly palatable, nutrient-charged drink immediately after calving – with footage showing a calving and how readily a cow will seek out the drink immediately after giving birth.

John Twigge says feeding Maxcare Reviva can also help increase appetite and intake, as well as avoiding the calcium gap that can lead to milk fever. Copies of the DVD are available free from Trouw Nutrition customer services by calling 0845 300 5858.
