Agricultural society leads the way in green thinking
Rural traditions and leading edge green policies can operate in tandem – that's the message from one of the country's most forward thinking agricultural societies.
The South of England Agricultural Society is spearheading a quiet revolution in the way it views environmental issues in a bid to meet its green responsibilities head on.
In the year of its 40th anniversary, the Society has launched a two-pronged campaign to become more eco-friendly while retaining its agricultural roots.
Members have set up an environment committee backed up by a local food initiative which will ensure all food on its Sussex showground is locally sourced.
Chairman of the new committee John Lytton said: "The Society's charitable status means that it must make best use of its assets and play its part in reducing its impact on global ecosystems. We are increasingly viewing our own showground as a resource which can be used to rise to these environmental challenges."
Members will now look at several energy saving strategies, including the use of solar and small scale wind power, rainwater recycling and traditional materials such as straw, lime and timber for building refurbishment.
At the same time the Society has committed itself to a local food initiative based on three headline strategies: the promotion of local and regional producers; the awarding of all new catering contracts to such producers; and the use of the Society's three main shows to boost local sourcing by expanding the popular regional food hall.
Society chairman David Allam said: "We have always supported local and regional food producers but we want to turn that support into a firm and ongoing commitment. This initiative not only backs our excellent local produce but also chimes perfectly with our green strategy by shortening the food chain."
"Agricultural societies are a very traditional part of country life, but we are determined to show that it is possible to retain our heritage while taking social responsibility. We are proud to be leading the way."
