AIB chief optimistic for future of farming

AIB chief executive Eugene Sheehy says he is optimistic about the future of the agriculture industry, despite the volatility in the sector.

But he says he is baffled by the stance of the farming community regarding the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

Mr Sheehy said farming is affected by events over which it has no control, such as globalisation and food prices.

He said a fundamental issue to be addressed is the difference in the farm gate price for food and the price paid by consumers.

But only time would tell about the outcome of their stance on the Lisbon Treaty which he described as 'slightly baffling'.

The Irish Farmers' Association is currently refusing to recommend a Yes vote for the referendum unless the Government signals it would veto proposals in the World Trade negotiations.
