Argentina’s fisheries Under Secretary, Georddo Nieto, resigned after 5 years at his post and will be replaced by Norberto Yahuar, according to a government statement over the weekend.
Although no specific reasons were given, Nieto insists, "its only for very personal reasons, after five years its time to leave".
There is media speculation that the depredation of the hake resource and regional politics, played a key role in the change over.
Nierto is a fisheries expert, from the province of Santa Cruz, also his replacement Senor Yahuar, is from Patagonia as well, which is the state where the president and her husband were governors.
The strange thing is, that Senor Nieto had plans in place to replenish the stocks of hake. The hake catch has dropped 70%, in the last 20 years and are vital export dollars to the Argentine economy.
There has been press and television allegations, of not only over fishing, but 30% of the catch going for animal feed
.
The Argentine fishing industry, also faces growing unionized labor costs and diminishing incomes. as international prices have fallen, while the price of fuel has gone up.
