ARGENTINA-FARMERS POSTPONE ACTION.

Contrary to their much trumpeted warnings, that they would launch a new protest against the government, the farmers on Friday announced that they were going to postpone any direct action.

The president has stated in public, "My blood boils watching their greed", the rains have come and the drought is over and unlike the tough Australian farmers, the farmers of Argentina have been at a loss in the recent harsh conditions.

The farmers went on to say that they were seeking dialogue with the government, despite the problems of the past.

No one can argue that the farmers have had a tough year with the fall in commodity prices and the drought, equally no one can argue there has been a lot of political posturing in the debate, for the farm leaders that are running in the mid term elections.

Former caretaker president Eduardo Duhalde has been accused of masterminding the farmers dispute for his own political goals, this has been compounded by links with the former president Carlos Menem, who is currently facing corruption charges in the court of Argentina.

It was in fact Menem who rigged the Hilton quota for ten years, carving up US$190 million a year between three meat companies.

Meanwhile President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, has released a series of financial packages to assist the poor in Argentina.

There has been a state of emergency declared in the tropical north of the country, where floods have washed away bridges and farms leaving the crops under two metres of water.

The army has been called in to assist in the drama and the government has offered immediate financial assistance to those affected.

The president accused the farmers of greed for complaining about taxes, when half the country is suffering under the rains.
