Australia has the largest camel population in the world ,living in the center of the continent. When the trains arrived in Australia the camels and Buffalos were turned lose now 100 years later, some estimates consider there are over one million feral camels in the country.
Gary Dann the managing director of Territory Camel, who have a beef and camel plant 30 kilometers from Alice Springs, is planning to export 300 camels per week to The Middle East and North Africa.
Camel racing is very popular in Alice Springs, so the best stock goes for breeding, the second grade for the tourist trade, leaving the balance that would be sold for meat after being slaughtered in the company abattoir.
The company has applied for permits, enabling them to upgrade the meat plant to meat export standards..
Camel meat is considered a delicacy in many Arab countries, very similar to beef with yellow fat, which is the same as Jersey or Guernsey cattle
