AUSTRALIA-HEREFORD SHOW AND SALE IN MAY.
VICTORIAN studs blitzed the field at last year’s Hereford National Show and Sale at Wodonga and they hope for back-to-back success this month.
The national sale recorded one of its highest-ever clearances last year and achieved a record top price with Charnock Jackal, the reserve grand champion bull, reaching $62,500, closely followed by Mawarra Trail Blazer, the grand champion bull at $48,000.
All up, six bulls sold for more than $30,000 each, contributing to the sale’s top average of $8671 for 82 bulls.
Herefords Australia commercial development liaison officer Geoff Taylor said many of the Victorian studs had held back special consignments for Wodonga again this year.
"We are once again expecting to see some significant competition for these bulls," he said.
Mr Taylor said seasonal conditions had been tough for producers across the country but industry confidence remained upbeat.
The Hereford breed was also enjoying somewhat of a resurgence in saleyard auctions, reflected in the major weaner cattle markets earlier this year where Hereford calves attracted premium prices.
"While the National sale generates some big prices it also appeals to a wide contingent of commercial cattlemen because there are also plenty of top quality bulls available at genuine commercial rates," Mr Taylor said.
The Sykes family’s Mawarra Hereford stud, Longford, recorded the highest average of the sale last year with $22,600 for five bulls.
Mawarra also recorded one of the state’s best on-property bull sales this season, selling 51 bulls to $18,000 and averaging $4598.
Deanne Sykes said given the positive result from their own bull sale and the amount of buyer interest they were optimistic about the national show and sale outcome.
The Hereford National Show and Sale will be held on May 13 and 14, at Wodonga Exhibition Centre.
