A community taskforce formed to save King Island ’s abattoir is looking at a three-level approach to overcome the problems of shipping costs, effluent and electricity for the troubled JBS Swift plant at Currie.

The island’s mayor, Charles Arnold, says the taskforce met the abattoir executives last night to discuss the company upgrading its works to increase efficiency and securing a reliable supply of cattle.

Mr Arnold says the taskforce is also seeking an extension of the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme to meat intended for export.

"This is a glitch, we’ve been fighting it for quite a while, and I think its about time the Federal Government and the bureaucrats gave us the opportunity to be working on a level playing field."
