There are over one million camels, running feral in the Red Center.
The recent years of drought have had a large effect on the kangaroo numbers in Australia, leaving a shortage of good pet food mince meat.
In the same conditions the camel numbers have increased, to over one million animals legislation has been proposed in the northern Territory to use the meat for pet food.
Hundreds of camels and buffalos were turned lose at the advent of the railways, in the early part of the last century.
There has been a lucrative meat industry derived from buffalo meat, which is exported world wide, from three approved buffalo export meat plants.
The camels are captured and the best quality ones are exported to the Middle East for breeding stock.
To date no practical use has been found for the majority of the camels.
